Mission Statement

In the Catteruccia laboratory, we are motivated by our conviction that no one should suffer from malaria and other vector-borne diseases. We conduct rigorous science to advance this common goal, while fostering a safe and vibrant environment of intellectual curiosity, collaboration, equity, and inclusivity, where any form of discrimination is wholly rejected.

The past year has presented unprecedented challenges at both local and global scales. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as well as waves of violence, racial injustice, and growing inequality and intolerance, has forced us to re-examine our values and the actions we take to promote them. The role scientists play in helping to correct scientific misinformation and act as sources of equitable health information has proven crucial in this global context, but more needs to be done.

The Catteruccia laboratory works to eradicate the global burden of malaria. This disease disproportionately impacts tropical and subtropical countries, and its devastating effects are heightened by its intersection with poverty. We recognize that our research has international relevance, and we strive to conduct equitable and ethical science within our lab, our university, and global communities.

We conduct basic science to answer fundamental questions about mosquito biology and its impact on parasite transmission. These discoveries critically increase knowledge of important biological processes and may contribute to translational efforts that advance public health. Longstanding collaborations with scientists in malaria-endemic countries keep our science, and our laboratory members, grounded in the needs of the communities we aim to serve. A rigorous, multifaceted approach to research enables our laboratory to study critical areas in vector-parasite interactions that have the potential to aid malaria elimination efforts worldwide.

As a research group, our goal is to promote health and equity globally as well as within our own communities. We welcome all people that share this mission without any form of discrimination, and we value and encourage members to engage in activities outside of their research, including volunteering, advocacy, outreach, and mentorship. We derive our strengths from bringing diverse researchers together to work as a team.
