The payment system reform is the focus of mechanism building in the health system reform in China. Of various payment systems, DRGs payment has attracted much attention in recent years, and also been explored in multiple pilot reforms. This article expounded the working principle of DRGs’ “risk adjustment” in the perspective of the essence of DRGs system. Based on the domestic and foreign reform practices in DRGs payment, it summarized the scope and conditions of DRGs payment application and analyzed the current technical conditions for implementation of DRGs payment in China. Then, a perspective on the future development of DRGs payment in China will be provided, taking the available technical conditions and the established strategy for future health system reform into consideration.
