Thursday November 19, 4:10 – 4:45pm

OVERVIEW

In her 2014 Ted Global talk, Taiye Selasi proclaimed that ‘passports don’t define us’ and ‘countries are invented.’ She concluded her talk with the questions “How can I come from a nation? How can a human being come from a concept?” Still nations define our legal identity, permit our global mobility and provide us access to resources. In this opening session of the conference, Selasi touches on the emotional intelligence and complexities of identity, discusses her own perspective and experience of what identity is, while discussing her own decisions to choose certain identifications. This first session will begin to get the audience thinking about how the issue of
identity complicates the task of identification.
